Description
Maritime piracy is a growing problem the international community is struggling to contain effectively. The rising human and financial costs associated with piracy have attracted considerable political concern. Earlier in January, the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee released its report on piracy, which contains valuable information and sets out recommendations for government and industry. On 23 February 2012, the Prime Minister will be hosting an inter-governmental conference in London on Somalia – the epicentre of this criminal activity. The inter-governmental conference is an opportunity for the UK’s financial and related professional services to demonstrate how it is responding to the problem, explain its current concerns and make a constructive contribution to the international policy debate. To that end, TheCityUK is organising a roundtable for a select group of expert practitioners on 9 February 2012 at Lloyd’s and I would be delighted if you were able to participate. The roundtable will be organised under Chatham House rule to facilitate frank and open discussion – that will enable us to draw up a short position paper for the Prime Minister setting out some common views.
The meeting will run of around two hours, starting at 12.00 on 9 February 2012, with a sandwich lunch. Please contact Claire Stuffins (Claire.stuffins@thecityuk.com) if you are able to attend.
