Pembrokeshire garage hits top gear

Company: Broadway Garage
Location: Broad Haven, Pembrokeshire
Employees: <10

Broad Haven-based Broadway Garage has beaten its first year turnover target in just six months, after its new owners took over using a business loan from a high street bank.

A Pembrokeshire garage has overtaken its first year turnover target in just six months, after changing ownership using funding from a high street bank.

Broadway Garage, in Broad Haven, offers vehicle repairs, servicing and MOT tests. It serves predominantly private customers, but also has contracts with the local coastguard and fire brigade to maintain and service their vehicles.

In April this year, husband and wife team Ian and Nancy Pyart took over the business, when the previous owner decided to sell.

Since then, Ian, who has over 35 years’ experience as a mechanic, and Nancy, who handles the business’ finances, have totally refurbished the premises.

The garage now employs five people, after the couple were recently joined by their daughter to assist with administration, and a new apprentice. They will look to add another mechanic to the workforce in the New Year.

Having forecasted turnover of £95,000 for the first year of trading, the couple have already generated £100,000 in the last six months.

The couple had been looking for their own garage to run for some time, so when the business became available for purchase, they approached their high street bank, which provided a loan of £33,000 to enable them to buy the premises and carry out the refurbishment work.

The garage now consists of two workshops, including one dedicated to MOTs, as well as office space and a waiting room.

Nancy said: “Since we opened, the garage has proved more popular than we could ever have imagined, and as a result we have already smashed our yearly turnover forecast.

“As well as refurbishment, we have extended the opening hours and this has brought trade from the local village, which has been very supportive. Many customers that Ian worked with in his previous job have also followed him over to the new garage.

“The funding we received from our bank was vital in allowing us to purchase the business, and gave us the platform to support the great trading we have seen so far.”

The bank’s Relationship Manager said: “Since day one, Ian and Nancy have shown hard work, dedication and solid planning, and the results so far speak for themselves.

“The business continues to go from strength to strength, and the couple are looking forward to further growth next year and beyond.

“With Ian’s vast experience as a mechanic, and Nancy’s skills in administration and finance, we were able to confidently put in place the funding package to enable the purchase.”
