Bid for London - Unified Patent Litigation System for Europe
TheCityUK is asking the Government to bid for London to house the Central Division of the Unified Patent Court (with its Registry), the Court of Appeal and the Mediation Centre.
A Unified Patent Litigation System (UPLS) for Europe would be a major step towards the long-standing European aim of creating a Single Market. This in turn would generate vital economic growth in the high-tech, value-adding industries that are essential to the future of Europe and its competitiveness. The EU’s Polish presidency wants an agreement in December.
Our conversations with Government come at a time when the negotiations are underway, and there are significant areas of disagreement to be resolved.
We believe that to make the system a success it needs to attract major international clients. This means providing a venue that has a global reputation for excellence and the infrastructure to match. The co-location of the three in London will provide clients with the benefits of economies of scale and cluster, as well as the recognition of London’s role as a global legal centre, as featured in the Unlocking Disputes campaign.
