The South East has an established and growing financial sector with particular strengths in insurance, management consulting, retail banking, and pensions and investments.
Financial and related professional services activity is widely dispersed throughout the region. Significant finance hubs include Reading, Milton Keynes and Brighton.
The South East has a population of 8 million and a workforce of 4.2 million. It is the largest region for financial and related professional services outside London, employing around 251,000 people and contributing some £16.8bn to the economy in 2013, or over 7% of the region’s GVA. The South East accounts for over 12% of the UK’s financial services sector employment. It is clear that the region is important in terms of financial services sector activity.
A major feature of the South East economy is its close relationship with London. More than 730,000 South East residents are employed in the City of London and the West End. This is made possible by developed rail links, with trains terminating at various London mainline stations.
