The region has a strong presence in banking, processing and servicing functions and is an important centre for professional services. Leeds is the region’s largest financial centre, employing nearly a third of the region’s workforce in the sector. It is followed by Sheffield and Halifax.
Yorkshire and the Humber has a financial and related professional services sector of national and increasingly international significance. Regional employment in financial and related professional services totals 129,000, or some 5.6% of the overall employment figure. At 9.7%, the contribution of these sectors to the regional economy was almost double their contribution to employment. Leeds is the largest city in the Yorkshire and the Humber region. The city has a population of over 700,000 people, making it the third largest in the UK.
The wider Leeds City Region is the UK's second largest centre for banking and home to the Bank of England’s only base outside London. Regionally, employment within the financial and related professional services sector has stimulated economic growth; by 2016, one in every two jobs across the region’s financial services sector will be a highly skilled job; over the next decade, the sector is forecast to account for more than a quarter of employment growth.
