Commonwealth of Independent States
The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), of which Russia is the largest member, includes a variety of countries moving, with varying degrees of success and outside assistance, to adapt to the global market and to international business standards.
The CIS states have different relationships with each other and the wider world. For example, Ukraine rejected joining the customs union with Russia, while Kazakhstan and Belarus signed up to it; however the Ukraine does take part in the CIS Inter-Parliamentary Group, while Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan do not.
The other countries of the CIS are Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Georgia and the Baltic States may have been in the former Soviet Union but are not in the CIS.
As the standards of living are increasing across the CIS, there is a matched growth in demand for more sophisticated financial and professional services.
