Middle East and North Africa
The Middle East and North Africa stretches from Morocco in the West through Jordan and Syria to Iraq in the East. The Arab Spring has resulted in different levels of uncertainty politically, socially and economically in some of the MENA countries. There is a strong need for all the MENA countries to diversify their economies to tackle unemployment and growing populations. A key element of future recovery in some of the countries will be restoring the health of banking systems, attracting foreign direct investment and investing in training education and qualifications for the work force. Public Private Partnerships will look increasingly attractive to governments to meet their infrastructure needs. Ensuring a robust and transparent legal framework will provide a platform to attract FDI.
While the MENA region is likely to remain in a state of flux in the short to medium term, each country needs to be looked at on its merits. The Lord Mayor plans to visit this region in 2012. We will continue to monitor developments in the region and advise members of opportunities as they arise.
