  • The organisation exists to further the business interests of its members through working with Government, trade and sector groups, and other stakeholders.
  • The MD, Public Affairs, Policy & Research will play a key part in delivering the business objectives of TheCityUK and ensuring consistent quality of engagement.

Objective of role:

  • To work with the CEO and Board to set the objectives for TheCityUK’s Public Affairs, Policy and Research programme to ensure its successful delivery.
  • To work with the ExCo to support the delivery of the strategic review.
  • Lead the Public Affairs, Policy and Research team in the effective delivery of their work programmes.

Key Activities & Responsibilities

International Trade and Investment Strategy Formulation

  • Engage with the CEO, Chairman, Board and members of the Executive Committee to develop and execute the strategy for TheCityUK.
  • Support the Executive Committee in the delivery of the new operating model based on the strategic review.
  • Deliver the agreed strategy within budget and to time.
  • Work with the CEO and relevant committee chairs to define and deliver the Public Affairs, Policy & Research (PAPR) strategic agenda and work plan to meet defined member needs.
  • Work with the Chief Economist and the Head of Policy to support the research and policy programmes, to underpin the advocacy work of TheCityUK.
  • Strategic direction and lead of the PA, Policy and Research team ensuring effective management of individual team areas.
  • Develop performance measures for the PAPR strategy agenda to feed into the wider company’s performance measurement approach.
  • Develop performance measures for the Economic Research strategy agenda to feed into the wider company’s performance measurement approach.
  • Assess team performance against PAPR strategy objectives.
  • Assess Research team performance against Economic Research strategy objectives.
  • Draft strategy and position papers, presentations and briefings on the PAPR agenda to support the CEO, committee chairs, Advisory Council or Board.
  • Manage relationships with external industry bodies and key stakeholders and attend relevant events to raise the profile of TheCityUK’s  agenda.
  • Develop and promote our position on key policy issues affecting our members and their business either now or potentially in the future, that showcase the importance of the sector nationwide.
  • Build ever closer working links with policymakers and senior business leaders in the EU member states, in consultation with the CEO, as a pivotal part of TheCityUK strategy given the increasing importance and focus on the importance of the EU market access.
  • Provide information, briefings and contributing towards policy development we wish to help policymakers create the right business environment across the regions and nations of the UK as it relates to this portfolio of issues.
  • Contribute to TheCityUK’s various communication messages recognising the various stakeholders in the UK and EU and their need for evidence, clear policy and compelling messages.
  • Research and source information, providing briefing notes for the CEO and other senior colleagues before meeting on policy or public affairs issues.
  • Oversee the set up and efficient running of new working groups, as required.
  • Work closely and collegially with counterparts in individual trade associations and within the City of London Corporation.
  • Undertake any other duties which may reasonably be requested and are commensurate with the post.

Person Specification

  • Educated to degree level, ideally in a business, politics or communications-related subject/relevant industry experience.
  • Policy expertise in the financial and related professional services ecosystem
  • Substantial experience working in a PA role, ideally for a trade body, government or regulator and having a well-developed network or relevant contacts.
  • A good understanding of the working of parliament, the government and political processes.
  • Ability to summarise complex policy issues and communicate them effectively in writing or verbally.
  • Strong relationship building skills with the ability to work with a diverse range of people, including senior colleagues, parliament and other senior stakeholders.
  • Experience in building strong cases on a foundation of sound and authoritative research.
  • Ability to add to a high-performing team.
  • Familiarity and interest with regulation and EU institutions.
  • A team player with a positive approach and willingness to constructively challenge
