Miles Celic's blog - December 2020

I hope you are all keeping safe and well and looking forward to a well-deserved break over Christmas and New Year. TheCityUK will be closed from the afternoon of 24 December for the festive period, but we will be back on 4 January, refreshed and focused on our agenda for the coming year.

As the deadline for a deal looms, we continue to keep a watchful eye on the precarious status of the Brexit negotiations. While a deal remains the preferred outcome, whatever happens we will continue to stress the importance of maintaining an open dialogue with regulators and policymakers both in the UK and EU, and tackling shared challenges and opportunities, including recovery from the global Covid-19 pandemic, improving sustainability, and the demands of demographic and technological change.

Our intense focus on deepening financial and related professional services relationships with countries across the world will also continue as the UK government seeks to secure trade deals with global partners.

Since my last blog we have launched our final two reports of the year: the 10th anniversary edition of our annual legal services report, ‘Legal excellence, internationally renowned: UK legal services 2020’ and this year’s iteration of our ‘Key facts about the UK as an international financial centre 2020'. Both reports underline the position of the financial and related professional services industry as a strategic national asset and world-leader.

It has certainly been an extraordinary and challenging year and I would like to the take this opportunity to thank all members for their continued support and engagement with our work. I would also like to offer my sincere thanks to the team at TheCityUK for their hard work and dedication over the past year.

This industry has played an important role supporting customers, communities and businesses through the pandemic and will be pivotal in driving forward economic recovery over the coming months and years. This is an area on which we will be very focused as we move into the New Year. We will also continue to deliver on our new strategy, working closely with partners across the industry, especially with the City of London Corporation, to deliver effective, high-impact outcomes for members.

However, for now, I would like to take the opportunity to wish you and your families a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy 2021.
