TheCityUK appoints industry champion for Cardiff

TheCityUK, the industry-led body for financial and related professional services across the UK, has appointed Dr Nicola Bannister as its new City Chair for Cardiff.

Nicola is a senior director at Lloyds who grew up in South Wales. She has two decades of experience in the banking and insurance industry. In her new role, Nicola, who is also Lloyds Banking Group’s Ambassador for Wales, will be a key leader and advocate for the industry in Wales, championing its considerable contribution and progressing opportunities for greater collaboration and engagement across Wales and with other regions and nations in the UK.

Next week her new capacity as TheCityUK Cardiff City Chair Nicola will be representing the city and Wales at a meeting of other city chairs ahead of TheCityUK National Conference 2021, on Tuesday 16 November in Bristol. This flagship event, in partnership with PwC, bring together senior industry leaders and policymakers with local and national perspectives for discussions on regional rebalancing and diversity and inclusion, as well as green and digital transformation.

The industry contributes over 10% of the UK’s total economic output and employs more than 2.3 million people, with two thirds of these jobs outside London. It is the largest tax payer, the biggest exporting industry and generates a trade surplus exceeding that of all other net exporting industries combined.

Emma Reynolds, Managing Director, Public Affairs, Policy and Research, TheCityUK, said,

I am very pleased that Nicola has agreed to take on this important role with us. All too often this industry is seen as London-centric. Yet, Cardiff and other cities across Wales are themselves significant international centres of excellence, exporting £2.5bn of financial and related professional service in 2019.

“I know that Nicola will be a powerful voice in celebrating the contribution of the industry to both the Welsh and wider British economy and its role in driving even greater growth and prosperity for the nation in the future. I look forward to working closely with her as she leads TheCityUK’s programme across Wales.”

Dr Nicola Bannister, TheCityUK City Chair for Cardiff and Lloyds Banking Group’s Ambassador for Wales, said:

I’m honoured to take up the role at such a crucial point on our country’s path to economic recovery and renewal after the pandemic. Cardiff is developing a well-deserved reputation as a financial and related professional services hub, and I am proud to have this opportunity to fly the flag for the industry in Wales and build greater collaboration with key partners and other nations and regions of the UK.”

TheCityUK city chairs represent some of the UK’s most prominent financial and related professional centres, including Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Leeds, Manchester and Newcastle. The City Chairs support the organisation’s programme of work to promote the strength of the industry and the high-value, high-productivity jobs the industry creates across the whole of the UK.

Dr Nicola Bannister takes over as TheCityUK City Chair for Cardiff from Katharine Finn, Regional Leader West and Wales Practice at PwC, who has taken up the position of TheCityUK City Chair for Bristol.
