25 July 2023

TheCityUK, the industry-led body representing UK-based financial and related professional services, has announced the appointment of Jerry Arneja as its new Regional Chair for the North East. Jerry Arneja will join a network of seven TheCityUK National and Regional Chairs across the UK to promote and advocate for the industry in the region.

As TheCityUK Regional Chair for the North East, Jerry Arneja, who is Area Director, North East & Humber Business Banking at HSBC UK, will be focused on developing opportunities for greater collaboration with other financial centres across the UK, leading industry engagement with policymakers across the region and in Westminster, as well as pursuing stronger links with key local stakeholders.

Miles Celic, Chief Executive Officer of TheCityUK, said, “We are delighted to have appointed Jerry Arneja as our new Regional Chair for the North East. His broad industry knowledge, expertise and strong experience in the region will be hugely valuable. We look forward to working closely with him to champion the industry across the region, build and strengthen key relationships with local stakeholders and forge stronger ties with other UK financial hubs.

“Financial and related professional services are a major national asset, employing one in 13 people – two thirds of whom are based outside London, creating jobs and driving economic growth right across the country.”

Jerry Arneja, TheCityUK Regional Chair for the North East and Area Director, North East & Humber Business Banking at HSBC UK, said, “The North East is a thriving financial centre and I’m honoured to take up this role as Regional Chair for the North East. I look forward to leading and convening a network of members and wider economic stakeholders to ensure the voices of the financial and related professional services industry are heard in important policy discussions, as well as maximising its potential as an engine to the wider economy that is key to the North East’s future success.”

The North East has experienced 29% growth in financial and related professional services output between 2010-2020[1], with Newcastle remaining the leading financial centre in the region. Financial and related professional services employ 43,000 people in the region, representing 4.1% of the region’s employment, and contribute £3.4bn, equivalent to 6.3% of total North East’s economic output in 2020[1].

TheCityUK’s network of Regional and National Chairs are based in some of the UK’s most prominent financial and related professional centres, including in Northern Ireland, the West Midlands, South West, Wales, Yorkshire and the Humber, and the North West. These Chairs support the organisation’s programme to promote the strength of the industry and the high-value, high-productivity jobs it creates across the whole of the UK.
