TheCityUK responds to the ‘Road to Brexit’ speech delivered by the Secretary of State for International Trade, Liam Fox
Responding to a speech today by Liam Fox, Secretary of State for International Trade, Miles Celic, TheCityUK Chief Executive Officer, said,
“Liam Fox is right to make the case for a Brexit deal which delivers for all parts of UK economy and for the future of the UK’s international trade and investment. This is about securing the UK's prosperity. Flexibility and forward-looking policies are essential.
“Frictionless movement of goods is a huge prize for any trade deal and should always be given a high priority. But we should not forget that services make up 80% of the UK economy. We must have a final Brexit deal which works for goods and for services.”
“The UK is the Premier League for financial and related professional services. The Premiership would not tolerate the Bundesliga to unilaterally set the rules it plays by. Manchester United would soon decline if Paris Saint-Germain decided United’s transfer policy, and Liverpool would swiftly feel the impact if Real Madrid set their ticket prices. Why should UK businesses be condemned to a similar fate?”
