IRSG priorities for the UK’s 2027 G20 Presidency Finance Track

The latest paper from the International Regulatory Strategy Group (IRSG), a joint venture between TheCityUK and the City of London Corporation, outlines how the UK’s 2027 G20 Presidency can help modernise the global financial and regulatory system to support growth, resilience and investment.

Against a backdrop of increasing economic fragmentation and rapid technological change, the UK G20 Presidency Finance Track should focus on a small number of practical, deliverable priorities where greater international coordination can reduce market frictions, support innovation and unlock growth.

The IRSG recommends that the UK Presidency should:

Enhance work on revitalising international regulatory coherence and modernised rulemaking addressing inconsistent implementation of global standards and reduce fragmentation. This work should recognise that existing standard-setting processes need to adapt to keep pace with rapid technological and real economic change. A more agile and coordinated policy approach is needed to deliver timely, interoperable outcomes that support investment, innovation and growth across economies.

Accelerate progress towards the digital future of finance, through the safe adoption of digital assets and tokenisation, which has the potential to reduce cross border frictions and enable scalable financial markets. Build the framework for a coordinated approach to AI governance and safeguarding that will support safe adoption, while improving understanding of its impact on productivity, jobs, and operational resilience.

Unlock scalable private capital and investment flows, including transition and adaptation finance to mobilise capital to support growth, resilience and energy security across G20 economies, and emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs) in particular.

Taken together, the IRSG’s priorities support a more connected and effective global financial system, positioning the UK as the leading advocate for a system that will drive both stability and growth. These priorities will support reducing frictions, enabling scalable markets and ensuring that emerging technologies and investment flows will contribute to productivity, resilience and rising living standards across all economies.
