Key facts about the UK as an international financial centre 2020

Our final report of 2020 underlines the UK's strength in financial and related professional services, and its position as a world leader in this area.

According to our estimates, the UK’s financial services trade surplus was £60.3bn in 2019, almost as much as the next two leading net exporters – the US and Switzerland – combined, demonstrating the UK’s competitive position in global financial markets. The UK also retains the leading share of trading in many international financial markets, such as foreign exchange trading, cross border bank lending and international insurance premium income.

As well as looking at the macroeconomic contribution of the industry, export destinations and global market share, the report also examines the leading role the UK plays in a number of specialist areas of financial services, including FinTech, green finance, Islamic finance and maritime financial services.
