Download the full reportAccording to our estimates, the UK’s financial services trade surplus was £60.3bn in 2019, almost as much as the next two leading net exporters – the US and Switzerland – combined, demonstrating the UK’s competitive position in global financial markets. The UK also retains the leading share of trading in many international financial markets, such as foreign exchange trading, cross border bank lending and international insurance premium income.
As well as looking at the macroeconomic contribution of the industry, export destinations and global market share, the report also examines the leading role the UK plays in a number of specialist areas of financial services, including FinTech, green finance, Islamic finance and maritime financial services.

The UK has a strong foundation in Islamic finance but must act decisively to maintain leadership. By strengthening Sukuk issuance, export finance, tokenisation capabilities and Takaful markets, it can deepen international partnerships and attract Shariah-compliant investment into priority sectors.
