Objective of role: To support and execute a high-impact, high-profile and targeted internal and external communications activity
Work closely with the Head of Public Relations and Marketing Manager, supporting the planning and delivery of high-profile, highly effective media and marketing communications activity.
To identify, create and pursue a range of communication opportunities that will build awareness of TheCityUK and enhance/protect its reputation.

Key Activities & Responsibilities

The role requires close engagement with the wider corporate communications team, other colleagues across the business and external stakeholders to ensure the effective delivery of integrated communications, the ongoing development of a series of resonant, relevant and current key messages, and strong cross-organisation engagement.

The job holder will work closely with the Head of PR and have a focus on internal communications, to support effective cross-team engagement and project management.
Key responsibilities:

  • Support the Head of Public Relations and Marketing Manager to develop and execute communication activities and campaigns that align with its strategic goals and enhance its reputation.
  • Responsibility for delivering on key performance indicators for PR and communications proactively enhancing organisational internal and external communications.
  • Support the Head of Public Relations to deliver the media relations programme and run the day-to-day the press office function – forging and maintaining strong relationships with target media, proactively identifying opportunities to generate positive news, develop key messaging in collaboration with colleagues etc.
  • Support the development of rapid responses to incoming enquiries and relevant external announcements that will generate positive coverage in target outlets
  • Engage, liaise and respond to enquiries from media promptly.
  • Support key spokespeople across the organisation to represent TheCityUK through the media by providing detailed briefings, attending interviews as required.
  • Support the Head of Public Relations in delivering a strong, consistent programme of senior media roundtable events in London, across the UK and overseas as appropriate.
  • Attend TheCityUK events and those where TheCityUK spokespeople are appearing as appropriate to manage media related activities.
  • Support the development and execution of an enhanced social media strategy, working collaboratively with the wider corporate communications team to ensure we are, promoting key business activities, initiatives and related news in the most engaging and timely manner and reaching all relevant target audiences.
  • Forge and maintain positive working relationships with key third party suppliers and key industry stakeholders to ensure effective delivery of activity, share knowledge and mutually support activity as appropriate.
  • Provide support to the Marketing Manager and Digital Marketing Executive on a range of ongoing marketing activities, leading on projects as required, e.g., report production, social media, conference marketing, collateral development etc.
  • Research, write, seek approval for and manage the distribution of communications materials for internal and external channels (e.g., press releases, blogs, briefing papers etc). Content should be prepared to a high level with the support of the Head of Public Relations and Marketing Manager.
  • Ensure all relevant external suppliers are briefed and their work is delivered effectively, and to time.
  • Manage the coordination, organisation and internal communication of planned activity across the company related to member/stakeholder facing output.
  • Identify potential complementarities on projects, conflicts and scheduling issues, particularly with an eye to resource commitments and ‘air traffic control’ implications.
  • Act as the day-to-day champion for ensuring that project management standards and systems are utilised, maintained.
  • Ensure the timely reporting of media, social media and marketing metrics as required.
  • Work closely and build good relationships with colleagues across the organisation – ensure awareness and understanding of business activities and the policy agenda to inform communications activity – and vice versa.
  • Live and proactively endorse the organisation’s values.
  • Undertake other duties which may reasonably be requested and are commensurate with the post.

Key Relationships & Interfaces

  • Senior colleagues across TheCityUK, including the Executive Committee, and project leads on relevant projects.
  • Corporate Communication team colleagues, in particular the Head of Public Relations, Marketing Manager and the Managing Director, Corporate Communications.
  • Journalists and producers etc. from across the spectrum of outlets: print, online and broadcast.
  • External suppliers – i.e., designers, PR agency, web agency, research partners etc.
  • Working-level communications contacts at member organisations as appropriate, counterparts at the major trade bodies (UK Finance, ABI, AFME, IA), the City of London Corporation and other relevant industry groups as appropriate, counterparts at member organisations etc.
  • Counterparts and appropriate working-level contacts at relevant government departments, i.e., HMT, BEIS, FCO etc.

Person Specification

  • At least three years' experience in a relevant communications role in-house or agency that has been focused on PR, marketing and/or international communication (preferably in financial or professional services or within a trade/membership body, but not essential).
  • Experience of building and maintaining relationships with external stakeholders and journalists.
  • Ability to identify news angles and keep across the evolving news agenda.
  • Experience of maintaining a strong network of media contacts.
  • Agile, able to manage multiple tasks and meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong organisational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in planning and delivering effective social media activity – in particular on Twitter and LinkedIn.
  • Calm under pressure, personable, confident, diplomatic and quick to learn.
  • Confident in dealing with stakeholders at all levels, diplomatic and respectful.
  • Educated to degree level and/or relevant industry experience.
