Reporting to (job title): Head of Public Affairs
Context for the role: TheCityUK is the member-led representative body for the UK-based financial and related professional services industry.
One of TheCityUK’s strategic priorities is promoting the strength and opportunity of the UK regions and nations, reflecting the fact that two thirds of the industry’s 2.3 million jobs are beyond the M25.
Objective of role:
The job holder will deliver activity supporting TheCityUK’s dedicated Regions & Nations Programme. This will involve engagement with members, policymakers, and local stakeholders to drive and promote our industry’s presence and contribution across the UK.
The job holder will work closely with the Head of Public Affairs and other senior colleagues in delivering against TheCityUK’s objectives in this area.

Key Activities & Responsibilities

Public Affairs Programme Delivery:

  • Work with the Head of Public Affairs, TheCityUK’s Executive Committee and senior members to further develop TheCityUK’s dedicated Regions & Nations Programme.
  • Work with colleagues to establish and strengthen policy positions that promote the strength of the financial and related professional services industry hubs across the UK.
  • Coordinate and support outreach across TheCityUK’s network of City Chairs, who are active in Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Leeds, Greater Manchester and Newcastle.
  • Engage proactively with government at both national, devolved and local level (including with ministers, mayors and constituency MPs) to promote TheCityUK’s policy priorities.
  • Lead on the production and delivery of set piece events, such as our annual National Conference.
  • Organise the launch of major regional reports in locations across the UK, and develop research content with insight drawn from regional engagement activity.
  • Collaborate with national and regional partner organisations on projects including regional events, visiting delegations and local initiatives.
  • Support the work of the Head of Public Affairs and the wider work of the Public Affairs Team where necessary.
  • Work with colleagues in the Member Insight Team on regional member engagement, and with Corporate Communications Team colleagues on regional events in particular.
  • Have good day-to-day relationships with external agencies and consultancies supporting this programme.

  • TheCityUK’s Chief Executive Officer; Managing Director, Public Affairs, Policy & Research; and Head of Public Affairs
  • Members of the Public Affairs, Policy & Research Team; Corporate Communications Team; and Member Insight Team
  • Chairs and members of key committees, including the Public Affairs Group
  • TheCityUK City Chairs.

 External:

  • National, regional and local policymakers
  • Key local representative organisations
  • Key contacts within member organisations and representatives
  • Key industry bodies and individuals.

Person Specification

  • Experience of a public affairs environment.
  • Understanding of and interest in local and regional policy, economic and political issues.
  • 'Self-starting'/prioritising tasks/attention to detail/conscientious/takes responsibility and ownership.
  • Excellent influencing and communications skills.
  • A collaborative and collegiate style.
  • Experience of a client and/or member service environment.
  • Ability to network, develop relationships and work with senior individuals across a range of organisations.
  • Analytical and writing skills of a high calibre.
  • Ability to develop and learn as policy areas develop.
  • Good understanding of broader communications and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Academic or career experience in relevant public policy areas.
  • Educated to Degree level/or equivalent experience.

This role is based in London but will involve travel elsewhere in the UK. TheCityUK office is a small and close-knit team with a flexible approach to tasks and responsibilities. It is essential that the candidate appreciates this and can work well in this environment.
