TheCityUK has today launched one of its flagship reports: UK-based financial and related professional services: Enabling growth across the UK which looks at the important role the industry plays in underpinning the prosperity of the UK's regions and nations.
UK-based financial and related professional services employ over 2.2 million people - 7% of the working population of the UK - and contributed nearly 11% of Gross Value Added in 2015. While London remains core to the industry's strong position, around two thirds – or 1.5million people –work outside the capital. Major centres with over 30,000 people employed in the industry include Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds and Manchester. Overall, 21 towns or cities in the UK have in excess of 10,000 people employed in the industry, and since 2010, around 200,000 additional jobs have been created.
As well as providing a breakdown of industry employment and economic contribution across the UK’s regions and nations, the report also identifies key areas for policymakers and other stakeholders to focus on, in close partnership with the industry, to maintain the industry’s international competitiveness. It does not attempt to assess the economic impact of Brexit on the UK’s regions and nations.
